At AASCO we use grading as a general term to describe the preparation of a gravel base; whether it will be used as a sub base for asphalt or just a simple gravel area to on which to park or drive. Typically gravel alone is found in rural areas or in situations when hard surfaces cannot be used. The video is showing an existing gravel driveway being graded with a skid steer machine to allow for the new asphalt installation. The pictures show a before and after of the driveway. We also can excavate new areas to enlarge the area or remove old asphalt /concrete prior to new asphalt installations. This can be beneficial in some instances. Most importantly, grading means placing the gravel to the correct elevations so that the new pavement will drain properly and builds a strong foundation for the weight of its intended use.
